Cowell Files for Re-Election
February 13, 2012
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
RALEIGH, NC—Treasurer Janet Cowell announced today that she will seek a second term as North Carolina’s State Treasurer.
“By serving a second term as State Treasurer, I hope to continue to be an anchor of stability and a force for continuity for the State of North Carolina in a year characterized by volatility and change,” stated Cowell. “By working collaboratively over the last three years, we have maintained one of the top-rated retirement plans in the country, retained a triple-A bond rating, and invested in North Carolina companies to create jobs in high-growth industries. We have recently taken over management of the State Health Plan to improve health outcomes for its members and make sure the Plan is on sound financial footing.”
North Carolina continues to rank as the 5th-best funded pension in the country, and Cowell created the $230 million Innovation Fund to support and invest in businesses with significant operations in the State while earning a solid rate of return for the pension fund. Additionally, North Carolina has maintained a triple-A bond rating for strong financial and debt management practices, and is recognized as one of only eight states to earn the rating from all three ratings agencies.
“We will further these efforts, with continued partnerships, to create a North Carolina that can lead the nation in economic development, job growth and education,” stated Cowell. “I am honored by the responsibility entrusted to me by the people of North Carolina, and hope to continue to make progress on all these important issues in my second term as State Treasurer.”
To date, Cowell has raised over $560,000 in support for her re-election as State Treasurer. Additionally, last week she announced the North Carolinians for Cowell, a list of business and state leaders that have pledged support for her in 2012. The list was released with the launch of her new website, www.cowellfortreasurer.com, which also hosts information about Cowell’s accomplishments and initiatives, recent news and upcoming events.
